Muslim women (doctors, in medical school, etc): Plz read! How 2 balance family & career? When have kids?

I’ve wanted to apply to medical school in the UK for a while now (i’m in canada)…BUT:
i reallllyyy want a family, a rather big one (3-5 kids) and want to dedicate time to my family (don’t want them with babysitter and daycare all the time, want to come home and prepare dinner and all that stuff).. and it’s just a personal priority to me.. and for me, family trumps career.. a personal choice, of course
i know i could become a GP and get out of school earlier but i really want to become a paediatrician which takes more years of training.. and either way, the earliest i would be out of school/training would be 28 or 30..and i want to start a family a bit before that (24-26ish)..and even lets say i manage to find a time to have kids.. working days are like 9-6:30.. and i just feel like i couldnt give 100% to my career or my family.. and yes..as you can tell i’m rambling and confused lol…

how do you do it????
i’m considering becoming a neonatal or pediatric nurse practitioner or ward nurse or something of the sort (but get a master’s for sure) instead of a doctor so i can have a family…

please your advice, opinion, etc.

..i’d appreciate your input/opinion on balancing family and medicine.. and if you think it’s possible/practical for me to do it given my constraints/dreams.. anything really . thanks!!!

  1. Yes, try nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Much shorter training and many of the same duties and requirements, including prescription rights.

Good that you know family is more important than earthly things.

  2. reading your question…….it feels like your taking the words right out of my head!! im in the exact same position that you are but i think im younger…only 16.

on one hand i really want to become a doctor but on the other i want to get married and have kids and have time to devote to my kids as well as a life.

like you said you wont be done until your around 28 and that’s a little late to have kids…or at least for me it is.

i have the exact same mindset as you, im thinking that maybe becoming a Nurse Practitioner is the best way to go because you get to do most of the same thing and you finish earlier and make good money (anywhere from 80-130K a year).

But whenever i ask Nurse Practitioners "should i be a NP or a doctor? i want to have a life? do you like it?" THEY ALL TELL ME TO BE A DOCTOR!!!!! ALL OF THEM!
they say that NP’s do the same work doctors do but because they didn’t go to medical school they dont get paid the same. almost all the doctors ive met (female doctors) are married and have kids. you can work it out

you can open up a practice with another doctor and work 2-3 days a week! have your kids during the last 2 years of med school or in your residency. having a supportive family and husband will help you get through..your not having the baby on your own

i still haven’t made my decision yet because im still torn, but i think im leaning more towards becoming a doctor. if you become a NP your going to regret not becoming a doctor…especially when you see other female doctors with kids and families.

    good luck with this decision

inshallah may Allah guide you to the right decision for you
