I want to become a Nurse in the UK, however, will my depression go against me?

I want to become a Nurse. Although, I am worried that something that happened in my past may go against me. About a year ago I was diagnosed with depression and took an overdose with prozac (not with the intension of killing myself!!!) I’ve worked hard to get myself straight and now I’ve decided as a career I would like to become a Nurse to help other people. Would my past mental health problems go against me?

  1. I’ll be honest up front that I am not from the UK and don’t know exactly how things work there, but here in the US your personal medical information is completely confidential and you only need to pass a physical exam that shows you are fit to work, as well as pass a criminal background check. Most medical conditions do not need to be disclosed unless it would affect your performance, such as hearing loss, vision problems, mobility issues, etc. The philosophy around here is if they don’t ask about it, you don’t volunteer it.

Regardless, depression is a totally managable condition, and as long as you are functioning appropriately, taking meds if necessary, etc., there is no reason you should be disqualified from working as a nurse.

  2. It’s certainly something you will have to declare and you have to remember you will be left in charge of the wellbeing of vulnerable and ill patients.

The hospital will have to make sure you will be safe to look after them. That is something only they will decide.

I’m sorry if you don’t really like this answer – but I think it m,ay well affect your chances.

But most importantly you will have to let them know.
